Video editing rig in the cloud with Nvidia Cuda.

Atkins Sinus is a clinic that helps people with sinus issues. They're always looking for new tech to improve their care and share info with patients. They decided to create videos showing surgeries, common problems, and useful tips for anyone interested.

Turns out, editing 4k videos isn't easy. You need a powerful machine to handle the editing and rendering. Their office computers couldn't keep up, so Dr. James asked me to see if hosting a video editing rig in the Cloud was possible.

AWS offers Nvidia CUDA cards, so I set up a Windows Server instance with Adobe Premiere. To make it easy and secure to upload and download videos, I created a Samba server inside the private subnet of the video editing setup. I also set up an OpenVPN server so anyone in the office could access those private resources easily and securely.

Thanks to this setup, Dr. James could connect to the VPN, mount the Samba share on his computer, upload files, do the editing in the cloud, and then download the finished videos, all without hassle.

To save costs, I set up an AWS Lambda that runs every 30 minutes to check how much CPU the Windows Server was using. If it was below 4%, the Lambda would shut down the server automatically, so they only paid when they needed it.

With a simple desktop app, anyone in the office could turn the server on when they needed it. That way, the clinic only paid for the video rig when they actually used it.
